Tile calculator questions

Practical guidance before you place the order or start cutting.

How much extra tile should I allow for waste?

Ten percent is a common starting allowance for a simple straight layout. Diagonal, herringbone, natural stone, large-format tiles and rooms with many corners or niches often need a larger allowance. The calculator suggests a starting figure but lets you enter your own percentage.

How is the exact number of tiles calculated?

The calculator divides the net tiled area by the area covered by one tile, adds the selected waste percentage and rounds up to the next whole tile. When box details are entered, it then rounds up again to complete boxes.

Should I subtract doors, windows and cabinets?

Usually yes when those areas will definitely remain untiled. For very small openings, some tradespeople leave them in the measurement because the additional material can help cover cuts and breakage. Use the deduction section according to the actual job.

Does the grout joint change how many tiles I need?

The main purchase quantity is based on tile coverage and waste, which is how tiles are normally sold. The grout-joint value is used only for the approximate row and column setting-out estimate because actual edge cuts and layout centring must still be checked on site.
